Presentation

The Frv Marara has been used for monitoring the marine environment, as part of the radioecological safety program conducted in French Polynesia at the time of nuclear tests in Moruroa. Apart from radioecological purposes, several cruises were devoted to others scientific programs. One of them was the investigation of the deep fauna, mainly crustaceans decapods. Between 1986-1996, more than 7000 traps, designed to catch shrimps or crabs were set arount the Polynesian Islands, at depths ranging for 20 to 1050 m. About 200 species have thus been inventoried, among which more than 80 recognised as new taxa. The list of fishing stations that is reproduced here has been published in Poupin (1996b).
